Ever been lost wandering around the iconic streets of Causeway Bay—in search for a vegan option but unsure where to head? Listed below are five of my favourite vegan restaurants situated in the most commonly traversed district of Hong Kong:
If you’re looking for dumplings, 雞絲粉皮 (cold noodles & shredded chicken with sesame sauce), soft-shell ‘crab’ sushi, and other traditional delicacies that are typically served with meat, then Gaia Veggie is the perfect restaurant for you! It is situated right next to Hysan place, and it is perfect for family gatherings or any large event that requires ordering more than two dishes. The menu contains just about everything you want (I was surprised to find ‘salmon’ sushi, mango-topped sushi, and many more unique dishes) without the ingredients you want to avoid.
Address: 8/F, Goldmark, 502 Hennessy Road, Causeway Bay
How to get there: Exit F1/ F2, Causeway Bay MTR Station
Opening times: Mon-Sun 11:00-23:00
Price range: $$-$$$
2. 上海生煎皇堅信號 King of Sheng Jian
One of the most affordable vegan eateries in Hong Kong (or at least in Causeway Bay) is this little dumpling store positioned a street away from Times Square. Not everything is vegan friendly, but they have a vegetarian lunch set available (that comes with a drink, main dish, and side dish), and you can also order individual items. After collaborating with Green Monday and incorporating the futuristic Omnipork, this restaurant’s most meat-centric dishes (dumplings, beef noodles, etc) are now available as vegan-friendly items. Their dumplings and dan dan noodles are both must-tries, and the dumplings can easily be recognized on the menu by their bright green color. This restaurant also recently introduced Omnipork curry dumplings, but I personally didn’t enjoy these as much. Do pay attention to the fun cartoon diagrams and instructions posted around the restaurant—you don’t want to make the same mistake that I made when taking your first bite!
Address: G/F, 41 Tang Lung Street, Causeway Bay
How to get there: 2-min walk from Exit B, Causeway Bay MTR Station
Opening times: Mon-Sun 11:30-23:30
Price range: $-$$
3. Kung Tak Lam Shanghai Vegetarian Cuisine
Another one of those family-centric, traditional dim-sum restaurants, Kung Tak Lam is situated on the tenth floor of World Trade Center. This restaurant offers a wide range of vegetarian and vegan dishes—from Shanghainese sticky rice cakes to sweet and sour ‘pork’ to vegan barbecue ‘pork’ buns. Although it’s on the pricier end of the spectrum, this restaurant is perfect for family gatherings, large group events, and once again, anything that allows you to share the food around and have a taste of every dish. However, if you have fewer people in your party, you may also opt for the singular dishes such as spicy dan dan noodles and other vegetable buns. In other words, there’s something for everyone, and the wide range of options caters to all food preferences.
Address: 10/F, World Trade Centre, 280 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay (6-min walk from Exit D4, Causeway Bay MTR Station)
Opening times: Mon-Sun: 11:00-23:00
Price range: $$-$$$
I was initially drawn to this place because of its large array of desserts, until I realized that this is a vegetarian restaurant and not a vegan one (like most others on this list). Still, most dishes on their menu are vegan, and the options vary greatly so—from ‘chicken’ Thai curry, to ‘chicken’ drumsticks made with seitan, you’ll be surprised by the diverse range of food that they offer. During dinner hours, however, there is a minimum spending of $200 HKD that you should watch out for. Since the dishes themselves aren’t expensive, you’ll likely order more than usual so it’s best to prepare some reusable containers for leftovers. If you visit with more people, though, the waiters may be lenient and lower the rate. For example, when I visited with a friend, the waiter offered to drop the minimum spending to $150—still a lot, but better than the original. If you order a set meal, it may be easier to meet the target spending. However, if you, like me, prefer to indulge in several smaller dishes, then you may have to order more to taste a variety of flavours.
Address: 25/F, Jardine Center, 50 Jardine's Bazaar, Causeway Bay
How to get there: Exit F1, Causeway Bay MTR Station
Opening times: Mon-Sun: 11:30-16:30, 18:00-22:30
Price range: $$-$$$
5. Strokes
To many, Strokes is a mini golf course that doubles as a restaurant and bar. To me, the highlight of this centrally located venue is their menu. While not every item is vegan or even vegetarian, they make a commendable effort to offer vegan alternatives to many of their dishes. Some of my favourites include the killer sweet potato fries, mac & cheese, and Asian energy bowl. They also offer a creative taste of Beyond meat as a twist on their usual Cauliflower burger.
Address: Shop G2-3, 1/F, 9 Kingston Street, Fashion Walk, Causeway Bay
How to get there: Exit E, Causeway Bay MTR Station
Opening times: Mon-Thu: 11:30-16:00, 18:00-01:00; Fri-Sat: 11:30-16:00, 18:00-03:00; Sun: 11:30-16:00, 18:00-23:00
Price range: $$-$$$
